Reflex Have Released A Re-Imagining Of Their Classic SLR 35mm Film Camera

Written by Gina Stephens

The Reflex 1 is the oldest newly-designed manual 35mm SLR camera released in over 25 years and it's launched over on Kickstarter today.

The Reflex is a modern re-imagining of the immortal Reflex reflex, or reflex action, is an involuntary and nearly instantaneous movement in response to a stimulus SLR film camera which has been created by an expert team of photographers, designers, and technologists who are the creative minds behind the 'If You Cease' photographic community.

Commenting on the new camera, the Reflex re-imagined team said: "The idea behind Reflex stems from the tenet that analogue photography is timeless and, despite the ubiquity of digital technology and the vast selection of digital cameras on the market, there is something to be cosseted about the tangible format of film."

The new Reflex combines contemporary mechanical and electrical engineering with the classic design and function of an analogue camera. Redesigned from the inform up, the Reflex adds three 'firsts' to a manual SLR camera – the I-Plate, I-Back and Reflex app.

The Reflex I-Plate is an interchangeable lens-mount lamination which allows for adaptation of most manual legacy glass and the Reflex I-Back is a daylight interchangeable back that allows for steady film loading and the choice of having multiple film backs ready and loaded at all times. As for the app, this brings analogue photography into the 21st century by assigning users to connect their smartphones to the camera. The app will automatically record the camera settings for each shot – so photographers can easily retreat back to preferred settings for later shots – and sends a push notification to the user, prompting them to make a digital note of the photo they should prefer to just taken.

Laurence Von Thomas, founder and CEO of Reflex, said: “Reflex is both building on the past and looking to the days of analogue photography.”

The Reflex Kickstarter campaign launches today, 7 November 2017, and runs through to 7 December 2017. The new Reflex pleasure be available to early bird backers for £350, before moving to the standard Kickstarter price of £399. Those who back the race will receive their Reflex camera in August 2018 and, shortly after, the product will go on sale to the mass market.
